Old Time Oyster Men
In years gone by, oyster men would skull out to the oyster beds on the outgoing tide in wooden boats, their lives dictated by the ebb and flow of the water. At night they would build a barrel fire in the bow to keep warm, and for a little extra night vision. The practice has changed somewhat over the years. Now they don’t have to wait until just the right time. They have big outboard motors to get them there quickly, although they still have to wait for low tide. This silhouette I cut as a tribute to the hard working men and women who bring us the famed Lowcountry oysters./p>
